We had two ladies come talk to us about typical Yucatecan dishes and how to make them. The avocado is a very important ingredient in Yucatecan food and we got to try a few different dishes! Everyone loved it! We all know now how to make salbutes, empanadas and sopes. Have them teach you when they get home, which is very soon! 

Day of Reflection

With all of the craziness last week, we decided to take a day off from classes to reflect on our time here. We talked about the goals we had before coming to Mérida and how those have been met. If not, what can we do about these goals and how can we make the best of the last two and a half weeks we have left? During orientation in Bloomington, the students wrote themselves a letter that they would read a few weeks into the trip. We thought today was the perfect day to reflect on those letters. Here are some pictures from the activities we did today. It was a hot one!

Museo Maya

We went to the Museo Maya today to learn more about the Mayan culture and how the Yucatan people lived many many years ago. We are so lucky that this museum is right in Mérida. We didn't have to travel far. We learned about traditions, wardrobes, artifacts, etc. Here are some pictures from our day!

Fiesta de traje

Today we had a Fiesta de Traje, which is where everyone brings something different to share. We had pizza, spaghetti, breadsticks and hojaldra. It was also an early celebration of the Fourth of July. We decorated the terrace in red, white and blue and my host mom helped with the table centerpieces. It was a wonderful time for everyone to get to bring their host families together. After dinner, Madison, Maddie, Cameron, Josh, Mark, Kendra and Lexi Moore shared what the Fourth of July means to them.  So wonderful to have so many volunteers!!!!
