Fiesta de traje

Today we had a Fiesta de Traje, which is where everyone brings something different to share. We had pizza, spaghetti, breadsticks and hojaldra. It was also an early celebration of the Fourth of July. We decorated the terrace in red, white and blue and my host mom helped with the table centerpieces. It was a wonderful time for everyone to get to bring their host families together. After dinner, Madison, Maddie, Cameron, Josh, Mark, Kendra and Lexi Moore shared what the Fourth of July means to them.  So wonderful to have so many volunteers!!!!

Uxmal and Loltún

Uxmal is an ancient Maya city of the classical period in present-day Mexico. It is considered one of the most important archaeological sites of Maya culture, along with Chichén Itzá, which we visited last week. Yay for more pyramids! The nice part about Uxmal, was the students were able to actually explore the pyramids and they had a few hours to do this. Uxmal had a lot more trees and we were happy in the shade! It was a beautiful day!

Next stop for us was Loltún. Loltún had more ruins and we were in a cave for about three hours. Today was a very hand-on day because we actually got to go inside the cave and explore so much! We got a little dirty, but it was worth it!

Birthdays!

This week we celebrated 2 birthdays...Maddie and Justin! 🎉🎈
We celebrated by each getting a piece of red velvet cake! It was divine and reminded us a little of home!

Celestún

Celestún was gorgeous! It was an optional excursion, but we were so glad everyone decided to go! We all took a ride on a "lancha" so we could see the flamingos and other great things! It was a relaxing day!
We are missing Emily, who was watching a conch be opened ;)

Izamal

Izamal is known as "The Yellow City" because of all of the yellow buildings that are there. All of the students were troopers and climbed the pyramid! The view was gorgeous! Well worth the work!
At the top of the pyramid!
The convent we visited.
